Menarche by Jonathan William Brooks

27 Aug

turquoise is the color of loneliness.
the lonely bathroom stall where there is blood on your fingertips for the first time.
you return to the lunch room smelling like a woman but no one notices.

your father is asleep in front of the tv
a half eaten burrito in his left shoe.
his absent mind reloading a shotgun in the glow of Death Wish 4

your mothers smile stretches out like a blank canvas across her face
practicing handstands, while your sister tugs at her thin skirt and asks for another piece of steak.
